What’s New for the Cincinnati Open and US Open in 2025?
Groundpassers, there are some changes coming to two of the biggest tennis tournaments in the US. Both the Cincinnati Open and the US Open are shaking up their schedules in 2025, which could mean better experiences for players and fans alike. Let’s break down what’s happening.
Cincinnati Open Expands to a Two-Week Event
The Cincinnati Open, one of the lead-up tournaments to the US Open, is getting a major upgrade. Instead of the usual nine-day schedule, the event will now stretch over 14 days, from August 5 to 18, 2025. This change aligns it with other 1000 level events like Indian Wells and Miami, which already have extended schedules. The site of the tournament is also undergoing some major construction to create more space for players and fans.
New expanded schedule for the Cincinnati Open
What’s New?
Bigger Draws: The singles main draws will now feature 96 players instead of 56, meaning more matches and hopefully more opportunities for up-and-coming players.
More Fan Experiences: A massive $260 million renovation is underway, adding new practice courts, fan zones, and improved facilities. The drawings released by the tournament look amazing, cant wait to see how it turns out.
This expansion is a big change for Cinncinati it is bringing more tennis to the tournament and also a new site. Some concerns have been raised by some players about the 14 day 1000 level events especially back to back leading into a Grand Slam. Interested in seeing how this goes.
The US Open Adds an Extra Day to the Main Draw
Back home in New York, the US Open is making history by becoming a 15-day tournament for the first time in the Open Era. Beginning in 2025, the event will start on Sunday, August 24, and run through Sunday, September 7. It joins the French Open and the Australian Open in moving to a Sunday start.
Why the Change?
More Opportunities for Fans to catch the 1st rd: The first round of the men’s and women’s singles draws will now be spread over three days (Sunday–Tuesday), giving fans more opportunities to catch their favorite players in action especially on the weekend when they will be off work.
Weather Cover: This change could help with some weather cover and making sure the tournament stays on schedule incase of rain especially in the early rounds.
What Does This Mean for Tennis?
These changes reflect the sport’s growing popularity and the demand for more tennis, better schedules, and an enhanced fan experience. More days, bigger draws, and improved facilities mean that both casual and hardcore tennis fans get to experience live tennis which we always encourage.
